The executive director of the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has said that the swing between the presidency and former special counsel, Martin Amidu, could have been avoided.
Professor Henry Kwasi Prempeh said certain details were taken for granted and subsequently blew the questions regarding the differences between the two out of proportion.
According to him, this gave Martin Amidu the reasons to declare the delay of his letter of appointment as a case in his resignation.
Speaking on Joy News’ current affairs show Newsfile on Saturday, he told the host, Samson Lardy Ayenini, that the bureaucracy surrounding office building needs reform.
“I think a lot of this public drama could have been avoided if things had been done in the right sequence and at the right time.
“What will it take at the time of your appointment to deliver the appointment letter?” I ask.
This comes after the Special Prosecutor resigned from his post on November 16, 2020, three years after he was appointed by President Akufo-Addo.
However, Prof. Prempeh disagreed with the process by which an office and logistics building was obtained for Mr. Amidu and his team, which allegedly involved his personal involvement after appointment.
In his opinion, the position should have been handed over to him when he was appointed at that time, the changes indicated to him will be made later.
“I don’t think it’s proper practice to appoint a person to an office and then let that person, no matter who it is, be the one to do the field work to find places and things like that.
“That process is a bit puzzling to me, it doesn’t speak well of the process,” he said Saturday.
In his resignation letter, the former Attorney General stated that “The events of November 12, 2020 deprived me of the only protection I had from the threats and plans directed at me to carry out the anti-corruption assessment report of Agyapa Royalties Limited transactions dictates that I resign as Special Prosecutor immediately. “
Amidu’s move has met with backlash with some social commentators saying that the country’s fight against corruption has been lost.
