Dele Alli has started just five league and cup games for Tottenham in 2020-21 and reacted after being substituted against Stoke

José Mourinho accused Dele Alli of “creating trouble for his own team” in Tottenham’s 3-1 Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Stoke City.

Alli, in his first start since Nov. 26, gave the ball away from which Stoke scored.

“A player in that position is a player who has to link and create and not create problems for his own team,” Mourinho said.

Alli has been linked to a loan transfer to Paris St-Germain in January.

The England midfielder has made just five starts in 2020-21 and has been replaced twice at halftime against Everton and, in the Europa League, against Royal Antwerp.

In September, Mourinho suggested that the 24-year-old needed to improve, and at the time said: “It is important that he perform.”

On Wednesday, the Spurs were leading 1-0 on a header from Gareth Bale when Stoke tied after Alli’s mistake before goals from Ben Davies and Harry Kane finished off the championship team.

Alli was substituted shortly after Stoke tied.

Speaking about Stoke’s draw, Mourinho said: “In that situation, an objective counter would probably end with a goal, and it ended with a counter behind our defenders.

“We were unbalanced because when you are in possession you have wide wings and another midfielder in a different line and they caught us on a counterattack and transformed the result of the match that was totally in our hands, so yes I’m upset.”

Mourinho said Bale suffered a calf injury so the Welsh forward did not appear early in the second half.

‘There needs a change’

Clinton Morrison, a former Crystal Palace and Republic of Ireland striker, believes Alli needs a change and a coach “who wants him.”

Morrison, who was in the Stoke tie for BBC Radio 5 Live, added: “Dele Alli is a talented boy, but I think there comes a time when a player needs a change.

“You try a movie and José Mourinho comes to the touchline and says ‘your movie has cost us that goal’; there will be more. José is not happy.

“He is a trustworthy player and he needs a coach who loves him and I don’t think José Mourinho is loving him at the moment.

“That’s why he doesn’t participate in many Spurs games in the Premier League. But there is no question that he is a talented player.”
