Egypt’s al-Ahly won his ninth African club title on Friday by defeating Zamalek (2-1) in Cairo. The continent’s most crowned club opened the scoring from a corner by midfielder Amr al-Soleya (5th), then Shikabala leveled for Zamalek.
It was a spectacular blow from Mohamed “Afsha” Magdy (86th) that gave al-Ahly the victory.
In an international stadium in Cairo almost empty due to the coronavirus, Al-Ahly started very strong with a first goal scored in the fifth minute by al-Soleya, ideally served by Tunisian Ali Maaloul.
The equalizer came from a left shot from Shikabala (31), Zamalek’s right winger, and a ball helped by the crossbar to enter the cage of international Mohamed al-Shenawy.
For most of the match, Zamalek dominated and put constant pressure on the al-Ahly players, thanks to Shikabala, Mostafa Mohamed and Ashraf Bencharki of Morocco.
Al-Ahly were tense for a long time and Zamalek missed several good chances to take the lead early in the second half, such as a Mostafa Mohamed shot well stopped by Shenawy and another from afar, but on the post, by Ahmed Sayed ” Zizo “(65º).
The favorite finally prevailed thanks to a magnificent goal (86th) from Mohamed “Afsha” Magdy. The Egyptian had almost scored minutes earlier with a shot controlled from close range by Zamalek goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabal.
Thanks to this ninth title, al-Ahly will represent the African continent at the FIFA Club World Cup in February 2021 in Doha, Qatar.
