Ghana’s parliament will be the location for the swearing in of President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo instead of the usual Black Star Square, the government announced.
A deputy government spokesman, Pius Enam Hadzide, said the decision is based on a request made by the leaders of Parliament.
He said that all COVID-19 security protocols will be strictly enforced at the new location that will house various dignitaries from around the world.
“On November 3, 2020, when President Akufo-Addo commissioned the office facilities as part of Parliament’s physical infrastructure projects at the House of Parliament, Accra, he was passionately represented by parliament that the The nation in general wanted the subsequent swearing in of presidents of the republic in parliament and before parliament according to the laws of Ghana and international best practices. “
“The transition team has favorably considered the request of the Parliament of Ghana expressed by Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu [Majority Leader] and therefore has decided that the inauguration of President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo on January 7, 2021 will take place before the parliament and in the parliament precincts, ”Hadzide said at a press conference.
The deputy minister said that the transition team is working closely with the leadership of parliament to ensure that the inauguration is carried out successfully.
In November, the Majority Leader said that Parliament has resolved to suspend the practice of swearing in newly elected presidents in Black Star Square instead of Parliament.
The constitution stipulates that a newly elected president must take an oath before Parliament; however, by convention, all newly elected presidents, except for the first term of President John Agyekum Kufour, have been sworn in at Independence Square.
“The House has decided that the President-elect must follow the rules, subject to security considerations, take the oath in the presence of Parliament, before Parliament and in Parliament. The Ghanaian parliament proposes that the inauguration of the president-elect take place in the current parliament compound, as happened during the first inauguration of President Agyekum Kufuor.
