The president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Akufo-Addo, will convene a consultative meeting on Tuesday as part of efforts to resolve the political crisis in Mali.
Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, who revealed this, said it is part of various efforts by the Economic Community to resolve the crisis in the West African country.
At a press conference in Accra on Sunday, he noted that the consultative meeting is in line with the efforts of the regional bloc to ensure the progressive development of member countries.
Ms Ayorkor Botchway said the consultative meeting will be held to offer conflict resolution strategies in accordance with relevant protocols to end the political crisis in the West African state.
“You will recall that at the 57th ECOWAS Summit of Authorities of Heads of State and Government, Ghana was unanimously elected as President of the ECOWAS authority for a period of 1 year.
“The election of Ghana places President Nana Akufo-Addo in the same place as his predecessors: Jerry John Rawlins, John Agyekum Kuffour and John Mahama, who had previously taken on such an enormous task.
“The Head of Authority is the supreme institution of the community and is responsible for the overall direction and control of the ECOWAS community.
“Take the appropriate measures to ensure the progressive development of a community and meet its objectives. The authority takes actions in all matters of prevention, management and resolution of conflicts, maintenance of peace and security as contemplated in the pertinent protocols, ”he added.
The President will be accompanied by several ECOWAS Heads of State to deliberate on the situation in Mali.
Tuesday’s consultative meeting will be President Akufo-Addo’s first official assignment after taking over as Commission chairman last week.
However, the Information Minister noted that the government expects all stakeholders and involved parties to work together and help so that the necessary diplomatic courtesies are extended to the Heads of State and relevant authorities who will be entering the country.
