President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Tuesday, October 27, 2020, presented one hundred (100) buses to Intercity STC Coaches Ltd, the company’s largest bus offering since its inception.

In presenting the buses to the company, President Akufo-Addo affirmed that the presentation of the buses demonstrates the Government’s commitment to modernize the company’s operations and position it to play its role as the most recognized transportation company in the country.

It will be recalled that the company, in 2016, received fifty (50) buses. However, it was towards fulfilling the company’s aspiration to expand its services to other West African countries. In compliance with this, the Government of Akufo-Addo took steps to help the company acquire one hundred (100) new buses on its own balance sheet.

Expressing satisfaction with STC’s success story, the President applauded Nana Akomea, CEO of STC for ensuring that the status of the company is now that of a “state-owned company that is determined to stand on its own, pay its way in the world, and contribute instead of depending on the public purse. We should give a big round of applause to the CEO and the leadership of STC. “

With COVID and border closures, having had a negative impact on the company’s revenue stream, especially since 50% of its operations are ‘ECOWAS-based’, he stated that the government decided to intervene to provide support to the STC to that can continue to function.

“Once again, I am very happy to know that after December, when the support ends, they will be in a position to stand up for themselves and move on. We have to salute their determination, “he added.

He continued: “We know how important transportation is to the economy of our country, and the work of the STC for the economic development of our country is extremely significant.”

President Akufo-Addo was confident in the enormous benefits to be derived from presenting the buses to STC, and urged him to provide even better services to his customers and those on the new routes to be developed.

In order to improve the country’s transportation sector, the Government has also purchased one hundred (100) buses for Metro Mass Transit Limited. Funds are also being raised for the supply of a total of four hundred (400) buses from Korea and Belgium to augment the existing fleet. All of these buses are expected to be in the country by the second quarter of 2021.

The president urged the STC management to continue to instill serious maintenance regimes into its operations to allow citizens to get value for money and ensure there are no revenue leaks.
