The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has commissioned the five (5) piped water supply systems under the Water Supply Improvement Project (WSIP) of the Ghana Debt Swap Development Program -Spain (DSDP).
In commissioning the Project in Amedzofe, Ho West District, on Tuesday, September 1, 2020, the President stated that the Water Supply Improvement Project (WSIP) is being implemented in the Municipality of Ho and in three (3) Districts in the Region, namely Ho West, Agortime Ziope and Adaklu-Anyigbe, at a cost of $ 3.78 million.
Beneficiary communities include Amedzofe, Ziope, Akpokope / Batume Junction, Matse, Dzolo Gbogame, and the surrounding communities.
The Ghana-Spain Debt for Development Swap Program (DSDP) is one of the interventions instituted by the Government to ensure the continuous supply of drinking water to the rural and peri-urban populations of the country, and also a clear demonstration of the Government’s commitment to fulfill the 2016 PNP Manifesto commitment to provide “Water for All”.
According to President Akufo-Addo, the commissioned project “has expanded access to water and ensured sustainable water supply and sanitation services in thirty-six (36) rural communities. Furthermore, the project has allowed the construction of eighteen (18) piped water supply systems and is expected to serve a total population of sixty-nine thousand (69,000) people in all these districts ”.
The thirteen (13) remaining water systems under this Project, he said, are in various stages of completion, and all are expected to be completed by December 2020, so that beneficiary communities will also enjoy potable water.
With the Amedzofe Water System drawing its water from a nearby spring, which has been preserved over the years, the president praised the chiefs and townspeople for this feat, adding that “I am expectant that others Communities across the country will emulate this worthy example, and protect our bodies of water, to ensure the availability of water. “
The government, assured President Akufo-Addo, will continue to create an enabling environment, through the provision of social infrastructure, to attract investment to our rural communities.
Further reiterating the commitment of his Government to increase access to drinking water for all, he revealed that funds have been obtained to begin work on the Water Supply Project for Rural Communities and Small Towns, also known as the Aqua Africa Water Project.
“The Project will construct one hundred and fifty (150) water sources and twelve (12) small town water systems to serve some five hundred eight and eight (588) communities in the Volta, Oti, Greater Accra, Ashanti and eastern regions. . . Once completed, the Project will benefit some two hundred eighty-two thousand (282,000) people, ”added the President.
President Akufo-Addo, therefore, urged the inhabitants of the beneficiary communities to help maintain the water infrastructure, so that they can continue to have access to clean water and, through it, ensure their well-being and general health.
