President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has cut the grass for the construction of a solid waste treatment plant in Fiaso, in Techiman South Municipal in the Bono East region.
The lawn mowing ceremony, which took place on Wednesday (September 9, 2020), was honored by the Ministers of the East Region of Bono, Kofi Amoakohene, Sanitation and Water Resources, Mrs. Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Executive President of Jospong Group of Companies (JGC). , Dr. Joseph Siaw-Agyepong, Supreme Chief of Techiman, Oseadeyo Ekumfi-Ameyaw IV, and the Queen mother of Fiaso, Ohemaa Mariama.
He was part of the president’s two-day tour of the eastern Bono region.
The € 15 million project, which is expected to be completed in four months, is under a partnership between Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL) and its private sector partners and the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR).
When completed, the plant will have facilities including recycling of plastic waste, finished products and spare parts, a composting workshop, a sorting workshop and an office building.
The rest are restaurant, weighbridge, recycling plant, laundry, skills training for waste collectors, clinic and laboratory.
Speaking at the ceremony, JGC CEO, who also serves as ZGL CEO, Dr. Joseph Siaw-Agyepong, revealed that the plant will create 75 and 250 direct and indirect jobs, respectively.
“… With the president conducting the mowing ceremony, we began construction immediately. All the machines are ready to facilitate the project, ”he said.
He thanked the bosses and people at Techiman and Fiaso for making a 100-acre piece of land available for his company to build the plant.
According to him, eight (8) districts of the region will bring their solid waste to the facility.
These districts, he said, include Techiman Municipal, Techiman North and South, Nkoranza North and South, Kintampo South and North, and Wenchi.
“This solid waste plant has the ability to classify, process waste into fertilizers, plastics, among others,” he said.
Dr Siaw-Agyepong indicated that what drove his company to build waste treatment facilities across the country was the president’s vision to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa and, by extension, the entire country.
In this regard, he congratulated the president for the creation of a sanitation ministry to meet the country’s sanitation needs.
In addition, he took the opportunity to congratulate the President on his appointment as President of ECOWAS.
For her part, the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, urged the citizens of the region to refrain from practices such as open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of garbage, especially in drains.
She firmly asserted that her ministry supported Zoomlion’s initiative to build waste treatment facilities in all 16 regions.
She encouraged other private waste companies to join and support the government in addressing sanitation challenges in the country.
According to Madam Dapaah, a similar project would be commissioned in Goaso in the Ahafo region on Sunday (September 13, 2020).
