The Executive Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS), Enoch Kwasi Gyetuah, has described as shocking and disappointing the claims of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that he consulted relevant stakeholders on the decision to reopen the schools .

The president, in his 16th address to the nation on measures taken to curb the spread of the new coronavirus, announced his government’s plans to reopen schools for JHS 2 and SHS 2 students by October 5, 2020.

In his speech, he hinted that he had consulted extensively with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and other stakeholders in the field of education to reach the decision.

He said: “… after consultation with relevant stakeholders, for SHS 2 and JHS 2 students to return to school from October 5 to December 14, 2020 to complete their academic year …”

“The Ghana Education Service, after further consultation, has decided to postpone the remainder of the academic year for all Kindergarten, Kindergarten, Primary, JHS 1 and SHS 1 students. The next academic year will resume in January 2021 , with the necessary adjustments in the curriculum, to ensure that nothing is lost from the previous year… ”, added President Akufo-Addo.

But Mr. Kwasi Gyetuah insists that not even one of his members was consulted in said decision-making process.

He said that the Council had developed the draft for the reopening whose copies had been distributed to the respective agencies, but that nothing of that type was presented, but the president said that an extensive consultation was carried out.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, Mr. Kwasi Gyetuah said that “it is shocking, really, really shocking… because as a major stakeholder in education, we have not engaged… they have not consulted us when the government comes out and announce it with the relevant stakeholders, who the relevant stakeholders are. If you look at the academic calendar what type of exam they are, they are going to write… they must understand that the academic year 2019/2020 has been lost… ”, he said.

Regarding the role of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in this apparent lack of communication, Mr. Kwasi Gyetuah said that he reiterated that “they did not consult anyone, it is their own pocket information that they are giving to the government. “.

Enoch Kwasi Gyetuah said that as a body that contributes more than 41 percent of the pre-tertiary system, its contribution would have gone a long way.
