The Obetsebi Lamptey exchange opens to traffic after the commissioning of the first phase.
The $ 17 million project is expected to significantly reduce traffic and congestion on the stretch that records 60,000 daily vehicular movements.
Perennial flooding during rains in the area is also expected to be addressed with the construction of storm drains.
In commissioning the exchange, President Akufo-Addo, who is on a two-day tour of the capital, said that the government with this law has demonstrated its commitment to addressing congestion in the country.
He also indicated that the government is carrying out a critical highway project to improve urban mobility.
“The completion of Phase One will cause the contractor, Queiroz Galvao, to begin work on Phase Two immediately after this commissioning ceremony.
“Today’s event is further testament to the government’s determination to address traffic problems,” he said.
President Akufo-Addo also said that the government is considering various proposals to address traffic congestion on the Kaneshie-Mallam stretch.
He then commended the contractor for completing the project five months ahead of schedule, saying, “We congratulate the contractor on this admirable work and hope it will characterize the remainder of the execution of this contract.”
The Obetsebi-Lamptey circle is a major roundabout linking Kaneshie to Accra via Graphic Road; Kaneshie to the Kwame Nkrumah exchange, then Kaneshie to the Abossey Okai parts center.
In October 2016, the contract for the design and construction of the interchange and other auxiliary works was signed.
Meanwhile, Highway Minister Kwasi Amoako Atta has warned contractors that the government will not tolerate poor quality works.
Then he assured the public that five similar exchanges in different parts of the country.
