Akufo-Addo commissions phase one of the Pokuase exchange

On Wednesday, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commissioned Phase One of the newly built Pokuase interchange in the Greater Accra region.

It will be recalled that, with the project starting in April 2018, and the originally proposed interchange as a 3-level single point urban interchange, the contractor, after conducting a value engineering assessment, proposed to build a battery interchange of 4 levels, which was approved by the Ministry of Roads and Highways.

President Akufo-Addo, at Wednesday’s ceremony, which was part of his 2-day tour of the Greater Accra region, opened up to Level 3 traffic of the interchange, which is the Awoshie to Accra road, as well as the Kumasi highway. to Awoshie.

The on-site project coordinator told the president that other levels of the exchange will open for use by the general public and motorists in the second week of December, adding that “by the end of March, we would have completed the entire 4th level “.

In addition to this, President Akufo-Addo was informed that some five kilometers of storm drains have been completed “to ensure that we do not have flooding downstream.”

Situation in 2019

As of December 2019, when the President last visited the Interchange site, some additional routes that had become necessary after a review of the works were advanced and completed before the end of 2019, with more than 10 kilometers of local community roads in process. completed within the area of ​​influence of the exchange.

The contractor, Zhongmei Engineering Group Ltd, told the president at the time that 4 kilometers of asphalt highway had been completed for the Awoshie section of the project, with landscaping, street lighting, traffic signals and pedestrian facilities in place.
In addition, 1 kilometer of single asphalt carriageway was completed for the Kwabenya stretch of the project, with pedestrian facilities and the construction of retaining walls.

The supervising engineer on site also told President Akufo-Addo that drainage works, retaining walls, earthworks were being built on the Accra-Kumasi road accesses to the interchange, in addition to the 2.8 kilometers of various sizes. of storm drains constructed as part of the project to date.

By touching the exchange itself, the engineer revealed that 99% of the pile foundation work had been completed. He also noted that GRIDCo’s 330kv transmission line had been relocated and 98% of ECG’s network, which was affected by the project, had also been relocated.
