President Akufo-Addo has commissioned a water supply system to provide drinking water to the community of Amedzofe in the Ho West district of the Volta region.
The Amedzofe Water Supply System supports more than 2,000 people.
It is part of the Water Supply Improvement Project (WAIP) of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency under the Ghana and Spain Debt for Development Swap Program (DSDP).
One of five in the District, the project cost more than GH ¢ 1.9 million and involves the construction of three reservoirs, two pumping stations, and the installation of more than 7,000 meters of pipes and 14 vertical pipes.
President Akufo Addo hailed the ‘debt swap program’ as a “major investment to provide safe drinking water in rural communities.”
He said more than $ 3.7 million was spent on water projects in Adaklu, Agortime-Ziofe and Ho West districts, benefiting more than 69,000 people.
He said the government remained committed to providing infrastructure in rural communities, following initiatives such as supplying clean water to help attract investment and assist in the implementation of flagship programs, including One District One Factory (1D1F).
The president said that the government, in its effort to increase access to drinking water, had obtained funds for a project to supply water for rural communities and small towns.
Known as the Aqua Africa Water Project, it would supply water to 580 communities in the Greater Accra, Volta, Oti, East and Ashanti regions.
He reiterated his commitment to ensuring an equitable distribution of the national pie and called on beneficiary communities to help safeguard and maintain resources.
Dr. Eli Atikpui, former Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council, who presided over the commissioning, called for the restoration of the tourist and educational potential of the area.
He said the city’s roads should be included in the Year of Roads project, adding that the area that had long been a stronghold of the nuclear power plant in the Volta region would support the presidential bid for another term.
