Former President Rawlings has said that President Nana Akufo Addo deserves praise for approving the $ 45,000 payment owed by the state to former world boxing champion David Kotei, popularly known as DK Poison.
An official statement signed by Mr. Kobina Andoh Amoakwa, the Director of the former President’s Communications Directorate, said: “It is gratifying that the President has decided to approve the payment on compassionate grounds.
“It is also noteworthy that the president’s decision was informed by the report of an investigative team that examined the request of the retired world champion before the payment was approved.”
The statement read: “For decades we have watched some of our outstanding athletes become destitute due to lack of a stable income.”
“The best testimony of gratitude that DK Poison can show to the president and the country will be to manage funds wisely.
“I take this opportunity to urge our successful athletes to strive to manage their resources prudently as they retire relatively younger and have to deal with the resources they earned while playing active sports.”
The statement said it was also important that “our successful athletes show kindness to some of our retired athletes in need.”
