Ghana got off to a strong start to the U-20 African Cup of Nations by sweeping Tanzania 4-0 at the Stade de Nouadhibou in Mauritania on Tuesday.
The West Africans wasted no time to take the lead in just the third minute through Percious Boah, who sent a free kick from long range.
Just as Tanzania seemed to be growing in the game, Ghana struck again with Abdul Fatawi launching Tanzanian goalkeeper Daniel Mgore just a few meters from the midline for a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Boah took his second in the 71st minute with a brilliant dribble and a strong finish to make the Black Satellites 3-0.
Josephlo Barnes finished the scoring a minute before the end of regulation and grabbed onto Mathew Cudjoe’s excellent pass to pass Mgore.
In the other group stage match in the same venue, Morocco beat Gambia with a first-half penalty from El Mehdi El Moubarik that earned them a 1-0 victory.
The results mean that Ghana leads Group C with three points, ahead of Morocco on goal difference, followed by Gambia and Tanzania, respectively.
Wednesday’s matches will see host Mauritania take on Mozambique, while Cameroon and Uganda face off in Group A.
