A professor from the Department of Global Health at the Kwame Nkrumah KNUST University of Science and Technology (KNUST) School of Public Health, Dr. John Amoasi, has urged Ghanaians to exercise caution to avoid an increase in active cases of COVID-19 after relaxation. of restrictions.
He noted that Ghana was currently seeing a reduction in new active cases, but could see a rebound if established protocols were not strictly observed.
The speaker, speaking during an interview on Accra-based Joy FM on Friday, September 4, said that upcoming events, such as political rallies and other activities before and during the December 2020 elections, could trigger an increase in new cases. assets.
He noted that the government should also focus on ensuring that established protocols are followed, particularly at the airport.
“We are at the meeting point of the people, therefore, we must implement measures that reduce the spread of the disease and identify, isolate and treat visitors entering the country.
“If we do exactly what we have proposed, we anticipate that very few people will slip away and those with the disease will be isolated and treated,” he added.
The case of Ghana
According to the latest Ghana Health Service update on COVID-19 in the country, active cases have fallen below the 1,000 case mark to 856, the lowest in months. The data also reveals four new deaths bringing the death toll to 280.
The positivity rate has also dropped from 65% in early August to 10% on September 1.
The country’s case count is 44,713, of which 97.5 percent of patients have recovered.
So far, four of the 16 regions do not have any active cases, and other regions only report single- and double-digit figures.
Only three regions of Greater Accra, Central and Ashanti have active cases above 100.
