Contrary to claims that the government was unable to collect actionable intelligence on the recent secessionist resurgence, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said that intelligence collected by state agencies enabled the prevention of more serious attacks by the HSGF on Friday. .
According to him, members of the separatist Volta, the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF) have been on the watch list of the Security Agencies and are being monitored from time to time.
Addressing journalists at the minister’s press conference in Accra on Sunday, September 27, 2020, Nkrumah noted that the government is taking steps to properly address the threats from the separatist group.
“The government is taking steps to address the succession threats expressed by a group in the Volta region and in particular the events of Friday September 25, 2020. Now, in recent months, the activities of this group have gained notoriety including when the government has been responding with appropriate force and the rule of law. The events of Friday morning have been contained so far by security agencies. Efforts are also being made to contain our permanent threats from this group, ”he said.
The HSGF, a group advocating the secession of parts of Ghana along the border with Togo last Friday blocked roads and raised flags as part of the agitation for Ghana’s independence.
However, reacting to the matter, the minister condemned the act and called on all traditional, religious and political institutions to come together to help combat separatist activities, even as the government initiates measures to fully control the situation.
“We continue to encourage all well-meaning Ghanaians, especially traditional political and religious groups, to express their solidarity with the Republic and join the efforts to uphold the One Nation agenda as we condemn these unfortunate events. Now, as law enforcement agencies maintain their presence to prevent new developments, it will also be important in the coming days to provide more education, for example, on the false basis for which the people who run these exercises seek to mobilize support.
“The key players who have been identified as ultimately responsible for these events are also on the watch list of law enforcement agencies and are really wanted at this time. In the next few days, the security agencies I think will release some of the photographs and identities of the people for whom they are a man. The inhabitants of these areas are encouraged to remain calm and go about their daily life without fear, ”he added.
