National tennis players Johnson Acquah and Mariama Ibrahim clinched the respective men’s and women’s titles from the McDan Foundation training matches after producing dominant displays last Saturday at the Accra Stadium.

Acquah defeated Benjamin Fumi 6-1, 6-4, while Mariama defeated Shika McKorley 6-3, 6-3 in stifling conditions on center court.

Female final

After losing the first two games to Shika in the women’s final, 20-year-old Winneba resident Mariama bounced back from the slow start and controlled her toe with her opponent by recording many unforced errors.

In an interview shortly after the tie, Mariama paid tribute to her Winneba Tennis Academy coach, Noah Bagerbaseh, for his guidance throughout the tournament that began last week.

“It was not an easy journey because all the players are good and the lady (Shika) that I met in the final is also a national player, but I wanted to show that I am the best.”

“I am going to work harder to maintain my number one position. I also pay tribute to my coach (Bagerbaseh) because without him I could not have won this competition.”
