AC Milan have been affected by injury and Zlatan Ibrahimovic reportedly suffered a hamstring injury in the win over Napoli, with the veteran striker out for at least ten days to undergo tests on the concern.
The Swedish leader has regressed years since returning to Milan from his MLS exploits, leading the Golden Boot race ahead of Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo after six games.
The 39-year-old was in the double when Stefano Pioli’s side defeated rivals Napoli on Sunday, and the Rossoneri were 3-1 winless to maintain their lead at the top of Serie A.
Ibrahimovic was substituted in the 79th minute for what appeared to be a muscular concern, with Lorenzo Colombo replacing the talisman.
And Sky Sport Italia reports via Football Italia that tests have highlighted a hamstring problem, and the Swede must undergo a new evaluation in 10 days to review the blow.
The extent of the injury is not yet known, but the forward will miss the Europa League matches against Lille and Celtic, interspersed with Fiorentina’s visit in the League.
Ibrahimovic’s injury will be a serious blow to Milan, who have enjoyed their best start in years after a turbulent 2019-20 campaign.
Pioli’s side are undefeated in their first six league outings and it looks like they could pose a real threat to dethrone Juventus, as well as challenge archrival Inter.
That’s largely down to the performances of his veteran forward, who has scored 11 goals in 10 games, defying all expectations of him after his return from LA Galaxy.
Napoli coach Gennaro Gattuso, a former teammate of Ibrahimovic, praised the forward’s display after his team was defeated on Sunday.
“Milan firmly believes in Ibra, they believe 100% in what they are doing,” Gattuso told Sky Sport Italia, via Goal. I think I think it’s even stronger now than it was 10 or 12 years ago.
‘They put the crosses because they know they are going to hit them. What we did today was create a lot of opportunities and not completely believe in them. ‘
