North Tongu Member of Parliament (MP) Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa wants Inspector General of Police (IGP) James Oppong Boanuh to be subpoenaed by the House in connection with election-related violence.

According to Ablakwa, the IGP must answer to the House for the loss of life and security challenges during the election period.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Mr. Ablakwa said that the ball stopped with the IGP.

“He is in charge of the electoral security working group. Can the task force appear before us to answer questions related to security, the lives that have been lost and all the security challenges that we have faced with the elections?

The MP suggested that “either before Tuesday or when we meet again, I think we should create some way for the IGP and the members of the working group to appear before this House.”

The highest ranking member in Defense and Interior, James Agalga, had also demanded the immediate dismissal of the IGP, for failing to guarantee the safety of Ghanaians during the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

At least six people lost their lives due to violence during the 2020 general elections.

There were 61 cases of electoral and post-electoral violence throughout the country.

Twenty-one of the incidents were actual cases of electoral violence, six of which involved shooting, according to police.
