The African Students Union (AASU) has joined the international community and its supporters in congratulating the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on his re-election.
AASU Secretary General Peter Kwasi Kodjie, in a glowing statement, also praised the Ghana Election Commission (EC) for performing credibly in overseeing “free, fair and credible elections” for the admiration of the world.
The president of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, declared Akufo-Addo the winner of the 2020 presidential elections, after defeating John Mahama of the Democratic National Congress.
Akufo-Addo won by 51.59% of the total votes cast compared to 6,214,889 for Mahama, which represents 47.36%. Akufo-Addo got a total of 6,70,413 votes out of a total of 14,434,574.
Crowds of jubilant supporters took to the streets in Accra and other parts of the country to celebrate the victory of the 76-year-old New Patriotic Party (PNP) leader.
With AASU’s top priority to strengthen the education sector from basic to tertiary level across the continent, the Secretary General particularly expressed optimism that the Free SHS program initiated by the NPP government will be strengthened to an admirable level as the NPP has secured another period to work. and improve the lives of Ghanaians.
“We are particularly delighted that the president’s vision to make upper secondary education (SHS) in Ghana free would see a continuation. Invariably, Ghana’s “SHS-free policy” dovetails with AASU’s strategic priorities and advocacy to make pre-tertiary education free and accessible to all without barriers, ”Kodjie said.

The All Africa Students Union (AASU) sends warm congratulations to HE Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo on his re-election as President of Ghana in the 2020 presidential elections.
In addition, AASU congratulates the people of Ghana whose conduct at the polls demonstrated the consolidation of Ghana’s strong democratic credentials.
In elections widely described as free and fair by both international and local observers, the Union congratulates the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana for acting credibly and monitoring free, fair and credible elections to the admiration of the international community.
AASU notes the many young people who played various roles in the recently concluded elections in various capacities.
It is encouraging to see that young people use their energies and ingenuity to play an active role in governance processes, an important element for democracy. We are particularly delighted that the president’s vision to make upper secondary education (SHS) in Ghana free would see a continuation.
Invariably, Ghana’s “free SHS policy” fits in with the strategic priorities and advocacy of the AASU to make pre-tertiary education free and accessible to all without barriers. AASU remains a capable player in the youth sector in Africa and a true ally of Ghana’s educational governance framework.
And as such, we leverage our support for the president-elect to implement policies that bring seismic changes to improve literacy and provide access to quality education. To this extent, we will continue to be a strategic partner.
Your Excellency, as you continue as the duly elected leader of the people of Ghana, we wish you the best in your national and international duties and hope that you will discharge your obligations with great dedication and continue on the path of Ghana’s growth and prosperity.
