Real Madrid will still have a few more years of quality with Sergio Ramos, but they are thinking about his replacement in the long term.

Sergio Ramos is the most important player in Real Madrid. He is the best ballgame center back in the world right now in terms of his passing range, passing accuracy, game changes and ability to control the ball. A technically competent player, Ramos can score from set pieces or from the penalty spot and was Real Madrid’s second top scorer last season. And of course, Ramos is a true leader and continues to be a world-class defender.

Hopefully he and La Real can agree to an extension that will keep No. 4 in the Spanish capital for two more years. Despite being 34, Ramos remains one of the best center-backs in the world, especially considering how much he brings to the team on offense.

But since Ramos is 34, Real Madrid must be proactive in contemplating life after the Spanish captain retires. It’s crucial for Real at the moment, but Los Blancos must plan ahead. And that’s why they have shown interest in some of the best young center-backs in the world, like RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano.

Beyond targeting a great young player, Real must find someone who is a good candidate to replace what Ramos leaves behind. They will have to find someone who can be a good partner for Raphael Varane in the years to come as Varane is next in line to be Real’s leader at the rear and is an elite defender as well.

Let’s look at three players who could be the ideal partners for the Varane center-backs in the next five years.
