Ghana’s transit trade generates huge revenue

Ghana’s transit trade is estimated to generate ¢ 134 million GH per year as revenue for the nation.

Benonita Bismarck, executive director of the Ghana Carrier Authority (GSA) who made this public, said that transit trade had become an important component of the country’s economy.

In a seminar on transit trade for police officers in Kumasi, he mentioned gas stations, restaurants and hotels, street vendors, food vendors and others as the beneficiaries of transit trade.

The Seminar aimed to deliberate on how to make the country’s transit corridor the preferred one and facilitate the growth of transit trade in the interest of national development goals.

It was also to highlight the importance of transit trade and also to address key concerns related to the conduct of the Police Motor Traffic Transport Directorate (MTTD) Officers deployed along the corridor.

Bismarck said the government was working to address the challenges and ensure that the country benefited greatly from transit trade.

Isaac Tersiah Ackwerh, GSA’s Ashanti Regional Manager, said the use of the country’s ports by landlocked neighbors was bringing huge benefits to the country.

He said that GSA’s collaboration with the Police to facilitate transit trade along the country’s corridor was of great importance, as it would ensure the safety of truck drivers and cargo in transit.

Deputy Police Commissioner (DCOP) David Agyemang Adjem, deputy commander of Ashanti Regional Police, said police were working hard to ensure sanity in the country’s transit corridors.
