Mohamed Salah is Liverpool’s latest absentee after testing positive for COVID-19 in Egypt.
The Reds are entering the Premier League clash against Leicester City with no stripes, largely due to injuries but also another wave of the deadly pandemic hitting the planet.
Salah needs to isolate himself until he tests negative and sees him join the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who have been hit, on the bench.
Salah tests positive
The two-time Golden Boot winner is not the only one who has tested positive for the disease since the 2020/21 season got underway with Sadio Mane and Thiago Alcantara among those affected.
According to Goal, the EFA had initially confirmed that Salah was fine and showing no symptoms, so I’m sure everyone will join us in wishing that would be the case for the Liverpool star.
It has not yet been confirmed that Salah will miss the Leicester match, but he has not been involved in any of Egypt’s clashes with Togo in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Salah attends his brother’s wedding
However, Salah has received criticism from certain members of the football community for the circumstances of his positive test, having attended his brother’s wedding in the run-up to the news.
The images appeared to show Salah participating in the celebrations with hundreds of people, who were not following social distancing advice or protection being widely used in the right way.
Like many countries, Egypt has implemented distancing guidelines and the mandatory use of face masks in closed public spaces to limit the spread of COVID-19.
Mido criticizes Salah’s behavior
However, Trezeguet of Aston Villa said Salah was extremely cautious during the hour-long ceremony and that his hometown mayor Maher Shtayyeh also came to his defense.
However, the same cannot be said for former Premier League striker Mido, who, according to Goal, gave a damning view of Salah’s situation during an appearance on Al-Nahar TV.
Mido said: “I know I may be under attack after my next comments, but it has to be.
‘Great negligence of Salah’
“Mohamed Salah made a big mistake by attending his brother’s wedding a few days before the Egyptian national team match, he showed great negligence with the measures taken to prevent the coronavirus and the result was that he was infected.
“Mohamed Salah’s carelessness caused the Egyptian team to lose an important player in a very important game and time, and also put the health of their teammates at risk.
“He shouldn’t have been present at his brother’s wedding, especially at that time. The wedding included more than 800 people, and half of them agreed to hug and kiss Salah.
“The other point here is the silence of all those responsible for the negligence of the player, which confirms that the player is still bigger than the national team and that will lead to a great failure.
Mido calls the Egyptian chiefs
“When I missed the 2006 African Cup of Nations, I was punished by missing the final and being excluded from the national team for six months.
“We lost the final, I was young and I think I’m older than the team, but I confirm now that no one is bigger than the team, and if anyone thinks that, it will be a big failure.
“Egyptian officials did not address any words of blame or reproach to Mohamed Salah and the damage caused by his negligence to the Egyptian team, and named each of the Sports Ministers Ashraf Sobhi, EFA President Amr Al-Ganayni, the National team coach Hossam Al-Badri, and national team manager Mohamed Barakat, all are cowards and fear Mohamed Salah fans who love the Liverpool star, but here I speak to you without calculation or fear of anyone, and what is said must be told to me.
“No one can say that Salah was not wrong in going to his brother’s wedding at that difficult time and in light of the crown crisis, all the English newspapers speak against us negatively.
“Salah should have been blamed for what he did, but everyone is scared.”
