The number of Ghanaian students attending universities and colleges in the United States of America has increased by 15.3% in the 2019/2020 academic years.
Ghana retained second place in Sub-Saharan Africa, with the number of Ghanaian students increasing from 3,661 to 4,221 for the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 academic years, respectively.
A statement issued by the Accra Information Office of the United States of America said the move demonstrated the strong educational and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
He said that nearly half of Ghanaian students in the United States were studying at the graduate level, and that the number increased by 22 percent from last year, from 1,860 to 2,270.
“As a result, Ghana went from 25th to 21st in terms of the world’s highest sending countries for graduate studies in the United States,” he said.
The statement noted that the five most popular US states for Ghanaian students were Ohio, New York, Illinois, Massachusetts and Michigan.
He said Nigeria ranked number one, with 2.5 percent representing an increase from 13,423 in 2018-19 to 13,762 students in 2019-20.
According to the statement, in the 2020 Open Doors Report, the United States welcomed more than one million international students for the fifth consecutive year.
He said students in sub-Saharan Africa saw a growth of 41,697 students in 2019-20, marking a 3.5 percent increase over the previous year.
“Amid declining numbers of international studies in other regions, Sub-Saharan Africa stands out for its growth rate. The West African giants Ghana and Nigeria contributed significantly to the increase in numbers in the region, ”he said.
He said that more than half of all international students pursued majors in STEM fields, while other popular fields of study included business and management, social sciences, health professions, and foreign languages and international studies.
