Zebilla constituency attorney and former MP John Akparibo Ndebugri says that special counsel Martin Amidu knew he was going through a mine when he accepted the appointment of President Akufo-Addo.
“At first, I said that he walked into a landmine knowingly and my prayer was that he would come out safe and sound,
“I hope he comes out safe and sound,” he added.
Speaking to Evans Mensah of JoyNews on PM Express, Mr. Ndebugri said that the Office of the Special Prosecutor is independent only on paper, but highly regulated in function.
“If you look at the Act closely, the Office of the Special Prosecutor was established as the establishment of a company, which has an executive board with Martin Amidu simply as its CEO, and a CEO cannot override the decisions of the board.”
He reiterated an earlier assertion that the Special Prosecutor’s Office was created only to fulfill an electoral promise and not to combat corruption.
“Anyone who says that the Office and its laws are designed to fight corruption, has a lot to convince to side with,” he said.
His comment follows a decision by the Special Prosecutor to resign from his post less than three years after his appointment by President Akufo-Addo.
According to Mr. Amidu, he resigns because he does not believe that President Nana Akufo-Addo has done enough to safeguard the independence of his office.
In a letter addressed to the President, the Special Prosecutor said that “the events of November 12, 2020 removed the only protection I had from the threats and plans directed at me to carry out the anti-corruption assessment report of Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions and dictates that I immediately resign as Special Prosecutor ”.
