Summary of the matches of the first day of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League played on Sunday afternoon.
WAFA 4-3 King Faisal
WAFA prevailed in a seven-goal thriller against King Faisal at the Red Bull Arena in Sogakope.
Konadu Yiadom gave WAFA the lead with a header in the 17th minute, but King Faisal equalized through Kwame Peprah in the 33rd minute and the first half ended in a draw.
After the break, rookie Godwin Agbevor scored a double with forward Daniel Lomotey also in goal for WAFA, who led 4-1.
But King Faisal will not go down easily, as he got one back on the scoreboard with a good shot from Wadudu Yakubu.
Ten minutes from the end, Peprah found the back of the net for the second time to establish a tense shot.
Medeama 1-1 Major Olympics
Surprisingly, Medeama drew 1-1 at home for the Grand Olympics.
Malvas and Amarillas, one of the favorites for the title, got ahead at halftime. Ivorian defender Ali Ouattara found the back of the net with a powerful header.
But the Olympics achieved parity in the 72nd minute through Michael Yeboah, who headed in the tie.
Ebusua Dwarfs 2-2 Elmina Sharks
Goalkeeper Razak Issah scored a late free kick as the dwarves regained a point against the sharks in the first midfield derby of the season.
Razak scored with less than four minutes to finish the process. His kick hit the wall and the Sharks goalie.
The dwarves found themselves losing positions despite taking the lead in the 40th minute. Dennis Korsah-Akoumah scored from the penalty spot.
The lead lasted a minute when seasoned winger Richard Mpong equalized before Ishmael Hammond gave Sharks the lead in the 57th minute.
But in the 86th minute, the Dwarfs won a free throw near the 18-yard box and Razak scored.
AshantiGold 2-2 Karela United – Obuasi
An exciting game between AshantiGold and Karle United ended 2-2 at Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.
Karela made a great start with Diawisie Taylor scoring in the 4th minute, however the Miners took control in the 20th minute and scored deservedly.
The goal came from Appiah Maccarthy, whose free kick was kindly deflected into the net. Then, in the 45th minute, Hans Kwofie headed in the second after he was left unmarked in the area.
Karela was the best team after the break and it didn’t take long to equalize. Samuel Ofori scored from close range in the 59th minute.
Both teams created decent chances, but couldn’t find the net again when the match came to an end.
