Timo Werner was delighted to mark his return to Leipzig with a double in Germany’s 3-1 win over Ukraine on Saturday.
After Leroy Sane canceled Roman Yaremchuk’s opener at Red Bull Arena Leipzig, Werner scored a double for Germany to lead Nations League Group A4.
Werner, RB Leipzig’s all-time top scorer, left the Bundesliga club for Chelsea in June but returned to star in his former home.
The forward was satisfied with his double and said Germany was only getting better.

“My first goal was really simple because the assistance of León [Goretzka] it was very, very good, “said Werner DFB.de.
“Scoring two goals here in Leipzig, where I had four great years, is a great feeling. I always enjoy coming back to Leipzig. It’s a shame that we couldn’t have fans here.
“Overall it was a good performance. Our form is improving and going forward things are looking pretty good. We are also getting more solid at the back.
“We are working hard to be able to have good euros next year.”
Goretzka also set up Sane’s tie and his five total shots were the most of any player on the field. Meanwhile, Ilkay Gundogan completed 97 of 104 passes and had 67 in the opposition half, 26 more than the next best: defender Niklas Sule.
Germany coach Joachim Low was pleased with his team’s performance.
“It was not an easy match for us. Everyone saw that Ukraine can play,” he said.
“In the first half, we established a high rhythm and had the game under control, in the second we were not so determined and we lost the ball a few times. Overall, I think we can be satisfied.
“We had to replace some players, but we were still able to find our rhythm. We brought tempo and a threat to the game with our three fast forwards, who kept our opponents busy throughout the game.
“On defense, we tried to break Ukraine’s passing channels from the beginning, so we tested Robin Koch in the middle. He did a good job. Toni Kroos will return to the team on Tuesday against Spain.”
Germany has a point advantage over Spain before their meeting, their last group matches, in Seville.
