The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. James Oppong Boanuh, has laid the groundwork for the construction of a 50-bed Regional Police Hospital in Kumasi.

The hospital, which is expected to be completed in August next year, will help ease pressure on the only existing and reliable police hospital in the capital, Accra.

This new facility would not only serve officers in Ashanti, but also police personnel, dependents, retired officers, officers from other sister security agencies, inmates of police cells, prisons, other correctional facilities, and the public in the northern sector of the country.

Mr. Oppong Boanuh, speaking at the ceremony at the Patasi Police Training School in the metropolis of Kumasi, indicated that the project was initiated by COP Nathan Kofi Boakye, a former Ashanti Regional Police Commander, but which stalled due to lack of funds.

The two-story installation is estimated to cost 8,300,000.00 GHS.

Mr. Oppong Boanuh mentioned that the project was being financed from interest earned on contributions from the police officers’ social assistance scheme.

Police officers with diverse experience in building construction will participate in the construction of the project and will be supervised by the Service’s projects department.

It will be run as part of the Police Hospital and the Police Medical Director will be in charge of its daily management.

The IGP commended COP Kofi Boakye for initiating the project, adding that the construction of the Hospital had come at a good time.

In the upcoming general elections, he assured Ghanaians of the readiness of security agencies to monitor ballots and ensure that lives and property are protected before, during and after the elections.

Ashanti regional minister, Simon Osei Mensah, urged project workers to accelerate actions to help complete it in time.
