Former Defense Minister Benjamin Kumbuor says the ability of many Ghanaians in the northern part of the country to use electrical appliances is a timeless testament to the former president’s leadership.
According to him, had it not been for then-President Jerry John Rawlings’ energetic insistence that the national grid be extended to the north of the country, much of the north would have been without power.
“There was no way other than the passion of Jerry John Rawlings that the national power grid could have gone North. It was impossible.”
Benjamin Kumbuor, speaking to JoyNews, said the former president had threatened engineers with finding a way to connect the northern regions to the national grid or resign.
“He threatened the engineers that if that was not possible they should resign; I’d get another engineer to do that. And it was done. We are here enjoying ourselves and the Akosombo has not dried up. “
He also attributed Ghana’s former stable democratic status to the late former president.
According to him, if the former president had not drafted the 1992 constitution in the form and manner in which it was done, including the addition of the indemnity clause, the 4th Republic possibly would have been short lived.
“Why is this the only constitution that has survived 27 years? Isn’t it true that it was a well-negotiated political document that appealed to everyone? ” I ask.
Former President Jerry John Rawlings sadly passed away on the morning of Thursday, November 12, 2020 at Korle Bu University Hospital after a brief illness.
Due to the impact of his political career on the nation, politicians from both sides of the political divide have flocked to the former president’s home to extend their condolences to the late president’s wife and family.
