Market women in Bolgatanga, the capital of the Upper East region, have expressed shock at the sad news of the passing of former President Jerry John Rawlings, whom they described as a “great leader”.
Flt. Lt. Rawlings passed away at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a brief illness on Thursday, November 12, 2020.
In response to the death of the former president through the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Ms Laardi Awuni, a vendor from the Bolgatanga market expressed her shock at his passing and said that he led an exemplary life worthy of emulation.
Mrs. Awuni lamented the death of the former president saying that he was a great and selfless leader who put the interest of citizens in the foreground during his rule.
Ms Awuni said that the former president established good relations with international organizations, which earned Ghanaians international support.
He said that during his rule, the former president gave priority to vocational / technical training at the basic school level to ensure that young people acquire the necessary skills to earn a living even after completing basic school.
Ms Charity Ayamga, a psychiatric nurse, said that the founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was dedicated to the fight against corruption.
She said that President Rawlings during his term stopped the smuggling of goods to different countries, which was a cancer among others at that time.
“Ghana has lost a great leader, so I will beg leaders in office to emulate their leadership skills,” he said.
Hajia Adisa Sulemana, a retired educator, said the former president. The president prioritized the economy, education and health sectors that were critical to the transformation of the economy.
He said that the former president was a revolutionary and committed to democracy.
The retired educator attributed the good leadership of former President Rawlings to his ability to network and seek advice from elders and opinion leaders in society, describing him as a “charismatic and truthful leader” and urging Ghanaians to learn lessons life of his great personality.
