Manchester United reportedly made a formal offer to super agent Jorge Mendes in an attempt to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford, 11 years after his departure for Real Madrid.
Ronaldo, 35, has been linked to a move away from Juventus in recent weeks with reports that the Italian champions want to ditch the superstar and his £ 28 million per year salary.
The Portuguese newspaper Record, through SportWitness, was the first to tell the story of Ronaldo heading to Madrid in 2009 and has now detailed how United have “made a formal offer” to Mendes, who represents the five-time winner of the Ballon d’Or. Gold.
The financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic have led elite clubs across Europe to seek to curb their spending and reduce their salary expense and Juventus is no different.
Ronaldo is by far the top earner at the club: he earns five times more than his highest paid teammate Paulo Dybala.
But having been hired two years ago to end his sterile streak without winning the Champions League, he has failed to get them out of line.
His current contract runs until 2022 and, given Ronaldo’s desire to continue playing, talks about his future have intensified after the disappointing start to Juventus’ new season.
Much has also been made of comments from rookie boss Andrea Pirlo, after he criticized his attackers as “selfish” following a recent Champions League win over Ferencvaros.
“I talk a lot with my players, but they make the decisions when they are on the field. They could have been less selfish and end the game earlier, ” Pirlo told former England boss Fabio Capello during an interview on Sky Sports Italia.
‘We are playing with two forwards plus two bandmen. Once we have everyone in shape, we can evaluate who to use together. Until now, not everyone has been 100%, so it has been normal to rotate them and leave one out. ”
Manchester United fans adored Ronaldo during his time at the club and many would undoubtedly love to see the Portuguese return to finish his career at Old Trafford.
Playing with Sir Ales Ferguson he enjoyed great success, winning three Premier League titles, two League Cups, an FA Cup and a Champions League title, beating Chelsea at the Moscow inn 2008.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was eager this summer to increase his attacking options, and Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho failed in his search for £ 108 million.
The 35-year-old Ronaldo is in the twilight of his career and while the Portuguese media is talking about an emotional comeback, it is unclear if United would abandon its desire to buy youth to meet the winger once more.
