Marc Cucurella, from Getafe, has been called up for the Spanish team to replace the injured Valencia defender, José Gaya.

Gaya suffered a nasty head collision during last night’s friendly clash with Holland, and had to be substituted and stitched up after a wound over his left eye.

In his place comes Cucurella, a talented and versatile Catalan who can play both on the left wing and on the left wing. The 22-year-old passed through La Masia before signing for Getafe on a permanent contract last closed season.

Cucurella played for Getafe last season on loan, impressing both for his attitude and aggressiveness and for his obvious talent. He had spent the previous season on loan at Eibar.

The Spain coach, Luis Enrique, had hinted that he was going to take the step at his press conference after last night’s game.

“We will talk to the doctors to see the breakdown of [Gaya’s] injury. Let’s see how it evolves, ”he said. “We cannot rule out calling another player, depending on the conditions. Tonight we will make a decision. “

Next up for La Roja are Switzerland and Germany in the Nations League. Spain currently leads Group Four of League A, one point ahead of Germany and Ukraine and five above Switzerland.

If he does appear, Cucurella will make his senior debut.
