Our illusion of defeating Covid-19 won us over – Ghana Medical Association

The Greater Accra regional secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) says that the increase in active cases of Covid-19 in the country shows that the virus was never defeated.

Dr. Winfred Baah said that the reduced number of cases and related deaths only caused the health professions, citizenship and the government to relax with preventive measures.

“We were all very comfortable and happy to almost defeat Covid-19. Trace, test, and treatment all worked along the lines, but these measures relaxed in no time.

“Contact tracing was not done as strongly as at the top,” he said.

Dr. Baah, speaking in an interview with JoyNews’ Evans Mensah on PM Express, acknowledged the shortcomings of the various stakeholders.

However, he assured the Ghanaians of a medical backup that would help save the current situation.

Dr. Baah explained that the Association has started a national campaign to educate Ghanaians about the virus and the need to go back to the various Covid-19 security protocols.

The GMA Greater Accra Regional Secretary said it is time to go back to wearing face masks and washing hands with soap and running water.

“When we travel, we realize that people just don’t wear their mask, they don’t observe social distancing either.

“This exercise, therefore, will create and maintain a form of behavior change to defeat the virus,” he concluded.
