Covid-19 cases will continue to rise without a vaccine – Virologist

Dr Michael Owusu, a virologist at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), says that until a vaccine is introduced, there will continue to be an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in Ghana.

According to him, the sudden increase is to be expected as most Ghanaians have jettisoned caution regarding security protocols.

“We cannot stop this. We will continue to have waves, and once we are not immune, our numbers will continue to rise and fall, until one day we find out about a vaccine that is available to many, “he said.

His comment follows a survey by the Ghana Health Service which indicated that the majority of Ghanaians are abandoning protocols; that is the use of masks and regular hand washing with soap under running water.

The Service also indicated that the reduction in adherence went from 44.3% to 5%.

Speaking to JoyNews’ Evans Mensah, Dr. Owusu said that in the absence of the vaccine, Ghanaians must manage their affairs effectively and take all precautions when conducting their activities.

“If we don’t adhere to these protocols, we may get to the point where other countries are.

“We have not arrived yet, but it is a sign. We have to be very careful and manage our situation and control it so that we never get to where others are, ”he said.
