The African Development Bank’s continued investment in water and sanitation infrastructure, solar energy and afforestation on the African continent cannot be overlooked when we pay critical attention to the impacts it has suffered on the continent.
These efforts of the Bank (AfDB) have led to winning many prestigious awards and recognitions in Africa and the world. From investments in large dams to water treatment plants, sanitation and green energy projects, the AfDB has been simply phenomenal.
The last of all is the winner of the prominent Prince Talal International Prize for Human Development, for having funded and supervised water and sanitation projects in Malawi, which is now helping to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in that country.
Water for Rural Africa (WRA) wishes to thank the African Development Bank for winning such an esteemed award, particularly for the difference it has made and continues to make in the lives of the people of Malawi at such a challenging time as this. As the President of the African Development Bank Group, Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina aptly put it, “This prestigious award is especially relevant to current global efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic and the urgent need to improve hygiene practices. ”
The Mzimba Integrated Urban Sanitation and Water Project, which was co-financed by the African Development Bank with significant funding from the OPEC Fund, was implemented by the Northern Malawi Region Water Board.
Going forward, the WRA is urging the African Development Bank to continue the tremendous work, but also hopes that the Bank will also consider expanding its reach to affect lives in rural Africa, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, by investing in small projects water, including desalination facilities.
