Police Inspector General James Oppong-Boanuh has said that the National Electoral Security Task Force will deploy 62,794 people across the country to ensure public order before, during and after the December elections.
He said the Task Force was ready to monitor all 275 coalition centers and 40,000 polling stations across the country “diligently,” saying “We will approach all polling stations as hotspots.”
The IGP, who is also the chair of the Task Force, at a press conference in Accra, said that the Task Force had identified 6,178 flashpoints across the country ahead of the 2020 general elections.
He said flash points were hit, as a result of the incidence of previous elections, the recent voter registration exercise and the crime rate.
Oppong-Boanuh said that the police had met with traditional leaders and religious organizations to educate the public on how to play their role in ensuring a peaceful electoral exercise.
He said: “We have also been meeting with election observers and envoys about their observations and findings, which we incorporate into our plans and deliberations.”
“Our priority also includes providing security for the Electoral Commission officials and the voting centers. We remain resolute and committed to peace and order, before, during and after the elections,” added the IGP.
The Task Force was established on October 17, 2019, composed of personnel from the Police, the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Office of National Investigations, among other security services, with the mandate to guarantee peaceful elections.
