A 55-year-old farmer, Solomon Kwadwo Kusi, was voted Best National Farmer for 2020 at a ceremony held at Techiman in the East Bono Region.
Mr. Kusi has been in agriculture since 2010, producing agricultural and livestock businesses ranging from tubers, cereals, vegetables, plantation crops, livestock, grass cutters, pigs, rabbits, timber species, etc.
The Jomoro district farmer, who holds a high school certificate, also owns 82 boxes of hives that have been colonized with bees and snails, as well as 10 fish ponds filled with tilapia and catfish.
His farm employs a total of 225 workers, comprising 105 full-time employees and 120 casual employees, all of whom exhibit substantial knowledge of crop farming.
The Ghana Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) awarded him a total sum of ¢ 570,000 Gh, replacing Charles Gyamfi from the Ahafo region, who was the winner in the 35th edition of the event in 2019.
The award-winning farmer is considered a role model in the farming community. Given his accomplishments, Mr. Kusi is seen as an epitome of work ethic and a source of motivation for the youth of Jomoro.
A member of the Ankasa Conservation Fish Producers Association, the father of nine has won several outstanding awards in the past. They include the Best National Tree Crop Producer of 2018 and the District’s Best Fish Producer in 2015.
Considered a philanthropist, among other social tasks, he has built 3 mechanized wells, in collaboration with Jomoro Member of Parliament Paul Essien, for the Fanti Newtown, Nyamebekyere and Awiafutu Junction communities.
The 2020 Best National Farmer also sponsored the grading of a 5-kilometer minor road from Mile 5 to Kusikrom and Tweako-Navrongo in 2014.
Their farms are located in Kusikrom, Nanakrom, Nyamekwame and Tikobo No. 1, as well as in the Tweako Navrongo communities of the Jomoro district in the western region.
