The Electoral Commission (EC) has expressed its willingness to meet with Parliament on Saturday, November 7.
This follows the inability of Commission President Jean Mensa to appear before the House on Thursday 5 November.
MPs were reportedly enraged by the absence and demanded that the head of the EC be held in contempt of Parliament.
However, the Commission in a statement issued said that it is surprised by the development.
“The Commission is very surprised by this turn of events, since on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, a notice of said meeting was sent after office hours,” the statement read.
According to the EC, at the time the invitation letter was presented, several commissioners had left Accra, and this was reported to the leadership of Parliament.
“It is also important to note that the President of the Commission has never rejected an invitation from the August Chamber,” the statement added.
The EC concluded by saying that, “The Commission and its leadership see Parliament as an important democratic institution and have always fully cooperated with the Honorable Members.
“The Commission is fully prepared to present its full report to the leaders and honorable members of the House.”
This roadmap according to the EC will be presented on Saturday, November 7.
