Chelsea put on an emphatic performance to secure victory against Rennes on Wednesday night at Stamford Bridge, which was another sign of how the team is progressing.
Frank Lampard’s team beat French Rennes 3-0 in the group stage of the Champions League and have now earned seven points from three games as they seek to reach the knockout rounds of Europe’s elite club competition.
Timo Werner scored on two first-half penalties and Tammy Abraham added a third shortly after the break, but the contest was much easier with Dalbert’s red card in the 40th minute.
The Blues once again looked impressive on offense and may be disappointed not to score more, but it was another defensive shutout and the bottom line seems unrecognizable at the moment.
Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy now has a remarkable six clean sheet statistic in his first seven appearances with the club, making his summer signing seem like an inspired business.
The 28-year-old enjoyed a fairly uneventful evening against his former club Rennes but showed all the signs of a great goalkeeper as he sprang into action at the end with an excellent point-blank save to keep a clean sheet.
Expert Rio Ferdinand was hugely impressed by Mendy’s online display for Chelsea and believes he has had a great influence on the team.
“What I saw today was a very calm and authoritative goalkeeper. Thiago Silva was excellent in front of him, but it’s very refreshing to see a goalkeeper from Chelsea’s perspective that you can look back at and say ‘you know what he knows what he’s doing’. He talks, he’s loud and aggressive with it. But he’s also very calm, ”Ferdinand told BT Sport 2 (9:55 PM, November 4).
