Oye Owolewa achieved victory Tuesday night to become the first Nigerian-American to be elected to the United States Congress.
The 30-year-old is addressing the United States Senate to represent the District of Columbia (DC) as a congressman in the shadow of the Democratic Party.
Owolewa got a whopping 164,026 votes, representing 82.84 percent of the total votes cast.
Voters in DC elect two shadow senators, who are not officially sworn in or seated by the United States Senate.
These non-voting delegates can vote in committees, speak on the chamber floor, and sponsor legislation, but they cannot vote in plenary.
“Looks like WE DO IT !!! I want to thank everyone from close family and friends to DC residents, ”Omolewa said on Instagram.
“Because of your contributions and sacrifices, I stand before you as the first Nigerian-American Congressman from the United States.
“In this role, I will fight for DC statehood and bring our values into the law-making process.
“While today is a day of celebration, the hard work continues as well. Again, thank you very much for everything. I wouldn’t be here without all of you, ”he said.
