David Alaba is reportedly in talks with Real Madrid about a possible move next summer amid his contract dispute with Bayern Munich.

The 28-year-old’s current deal expires in June and he has turned down two extension offers in recent weeks.

Liverpool are among the clubs believed to be following the defender, but Madrid appear to have taken the first step.

According to the Spanish publication AS, Alaba’s agents have started negotiations with a view to signing a pre-contract in January.

The report adds that Madrid are confident of getting the Austrian to agree on the terms of the change to the Bernabéu in light of his recent criticism of Bayern’s conduct.

Alaba said he did not learn that Bayern had withdrawn a second contract offer and is now unsure where his future lies.

“I heard it like everyone else on the news,” Alaba said Tuesday. “I can’t say how it will continue from this point.

“I am happy to play for Bayern and be part of the team. But I cannot say what the future will be like after last night, as no one has officially spoken to me.”

His comments were downplayed by Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, who explained the situation in detail.

“I can tell you what happened. We negotiated and made an offer to David. He turned it down. Ten days ago we sat down again and presented another offer, with a deadline,” Salihamidzic told Sky.

“We informed David and his agent that we would withdraw the offer when the deadline expired. We did. I spoke with his agent again on Saturday and tried to speak with David again on Sunday because he wanted to know what was going on, but it didn’t take long.

“I no longer know how we will find a way to get back together. We made an offer and it was rejected. Now we have to assume that David will leave us.”
