An Accra circuit court sentenced a banker to two years in prison with hard labor for stealing GH ¢ 499,022.10 belonging to CAL Bank Limited.
Leslie Afotey, after stealing the money in 2018, refunded GHS128,022.10 of GH ¢ 160,000 that she won from gambling.
He pleaded not guilty to the robbery charge, but the court, chaired by Ms. Evelyn Asamoah, found him guilty at the end of the trial.
Chief Inspector Emmanuel Haligah said the plaintiff was a member of the Internal Audit staff at CAL Bank Limited Headquarters, Accra, while Afotey was a bulk cashier at the Bank’s Spintex branch.
The prosecution said Afotey’s task was to go out with a bullion truck and a driver to Bank clients at various locations to collect daily savings.
He said Afotey was also mandated to bring the money to the bank and deposit it in an account.
Chief Inspector Haligah said that as a control measure, the Bank audited its accounts and staff before the close of each year.
He said that in December 2018, the Bank audited an account in which the convict had been depositing money collected from clients.
An amount of GH ¢ 499,022.10 was detected unaccounted for and when Afotey learned of the audit, he quickly stopped his daily rounds and returned to the office, the prosecution said.
When officials at the bank’s head office decided to find out why the money wasn’t in the account, Afotey was thrown out.
A report was made to the police in Osu on December 28, 2018, after which Afotey was arrested.
He admitted the crime during questioning and begged for a month to return the money.
