Ghanaians prefer peaceful elections to free and fair elections – CDD Report

The latest pre-election poll conducted by the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) found that Ghanaians would rather have peaceful than fair elections.

The survey, which was conducted between September and October this year, had about 2,400 respondents from all regions who were equally divided between men and women. The survey was conducted in 166 districts across the country.

The survey found that about 66 percent of respondents would prefer the 2020 elections to be completely peaceful, even if they were not completely free and fair, while 24 percent of respondents would prefer that the elections be completely free and fair. even if it is not entirely peaceful.

Along the same lines, 80% of the people interviewed said they would prefer a completely free and fair election, even if their candidate lost.

On the other hand, 21 percent of the people interviewed said they would prefer their favorite candidate to win, even if the elections are not completely free and fair.

The poll also showed that a large majority of Ghanaians believe that their votes have an effect. To this end, 85% of respondents said that elections allow the voter to remove leaders who do not do what the people want from office.

National trajectory

The report found that Ghanaians are evenly divided on whether the country is going in the right direction. While 47% believe it is, 47% believe that it is not going in the right direction. A small number (6 percent) were unsure of the direction of the country.

Economic condition

Regarding the national economic situation, the majority of those surveyed (57 percent) believe that the situation is bad. A small number (13%) are not sure about the current economic situation in the country, while 30% are optimistic about the economic situation in the country.

Responding to how they thought the country had done economically with the arrival of the coronavirus disease, 69 percent of those surveyed thought the situation had worsened.

While 49 percent of those surveyed believe that economic conditions have worsened in the past 12 months, 69 percent were optimistic about the economic outlook for the next 12 months.

Personal economy

On a personal level, while 55 percent of those interviewed in this survey thought they were doing poorly financially, 34 percent said their living conditions were quite good.

On the impact of the coronavirus on their living conditions, 65 percent of those surveyed said that their conditions were much worse than they were before the outbreak of the pandemic.

Government performance

The main concern of those interviewed was the provision of infrastructure (51 percent) and unemployment (46 percent). Education ranked third as a concern for the majority of respondents (28 percent), followed by health and the economy (21 and 20 percent respectively).

The majority of respondents (52 percent) said the government had done quite well in handling their concerns in these areas. Another 46 percent thought the government had done very poorly in its execution in these areas.

On the government’s management of the economy, 60 percent said it had done very well, while 38 percent thought the opposite.

The government’s performance in job creation was viewed positively by 56 percent of respondents, while its performance in improving living standards received a nod from 54 percent of respondents.

In delivering on its 2016 campaign promises, the government scored high 85 percent among those surveyed for implementing the SHS Free policy. It obtained similar marks in the renewal of the National Health Insurance Plan (66%) and in the fight against illegal mining (55%).

It did not fare so well in complying with the ‘One District, One Factory’ and ‘One Village, One Dam’ policies, where it scored 48% and 46% respectively.

Trust in institutions

Respondents showed a high level of trust in state institutions related to elections.

First, there is the Ghana Armed Forces, which the majority of respondents (91 percent) believe are well prepared for the upcoming elections.

The media also received a positive opinion regarding the preparation for the elections, and 89% of those interviewed said they trusted them.

The Ghana Police Service was next, with 87% of respondents expressing confidence in its preparation for the elections.
