Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is still adamant in his decision to play Harry Kane in the 2019 Champions League final with the Spurs striker struggling to stay fit.
Kane was a major injury doubt for Spurs’ biggest game in their history against Liverpool and missed the final six weeks of the Premier League season with a ligament injury.
The England captain returned in time to start the final, but failed to impress when Tottenham were left without a 2-0 loss to their Premier League rivals.
But Pochettino never had any doubts about not starting Kane in the Madrid main event, telling Sky Sports: ‘For sure if you put me in the same situation, I would make the same decision again.
You can’t doubt Harry Kane. Of course, maybe you can make some changes, but Harry Kane was our main striker and he was the best player in Tottenham and also in Europe and when he is fit to play you can have no doubts.
“We certainly believed they were the best team to win the game.”
Kane was Tottenham’s point man that season and finished the campaign with 24 goals and six assists in 40 games in all competitions.
The forward scored five goals in the race to the Champions League final, but a serious injury in mid-April derailed his season and Tottenham’s.
He missed the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Manchester City and the two semi-final matches against Ajax, and Spurs won dramatically due to a second-half hat-trick from Lucas Moura. in Amsterdam.
It turned out to be the highlight of Pochettino’s reign in North London, as he was fired as Spurs coach six months after the final in Madrid due to a poor start to the 2019-20 campaign.
The Argentine coach said he is very sorry that he was unable to present a trophy to the Tottenham community during his five and a half years with the Premier League team.
Pochettino continued: ‘It was an incredible trip and I really enjoyed it, we feel sad that we were not able to deliver a trophy to the fans and the group of players.
‘We lost (the opportunity) to win a title. That would have put the icing on the cake.
