A delegation of ambassadors from the European Union (EU) paid a courtesy visit to former President John Dramani Mahama, presidential candidate of the Democratic National Congress (NDC) in Accra on Monday, November 2, 2020.

The delegation, led by Ms Diana Acconcia, head of the EU delegation in Ghana, met with the former president as part of the team’s pre-election follow-up event in Ghana.

The members of the EU delegation were; Mr. Christoph Retzlaff, Ambassador of Germany in Ghana; Mrs. Daniela d’Orlandi, Ambassador of Italy in Ghana and Mrs. Anne Sophie Avé, Ambassador of France in Ghana.

The former president’s team members were; Mr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, National President of the NDC; Prosper Douglas Bani, former Minister of the Interior; Mr. Emmanuel Bombande, former Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs; Mr. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, NDC Director of Elections, and Lieutenant Colonel Gbevlo Lartey (rtd), former National Security Coordinator.

Discussions at the meeting focused on the current political situation in Ghana and preparations for the general elections on 7 December.

Mahama described the EU as a special and important partner for Ghana and said the country appreciated its relationship with the EU.

“This year is a special year in Ghana because we are having presidential and parliamentary elections. And we believe that these elections are critical to consolidate Ghana’s democracy and also to take Ghana to the next level, especially after one year, where we have this COVID – 19 pandemic that has affected the whole world ”, he said.

Mahama praised the EU for having a special interest in Ghana and said that the NDC had some problems with the Electoral Commission processes before the general elections in December, which, according to him, was creating anxiety before the elections.

He said, for example, that they had to submit presidential nominations to the EC using a provisional register, which he said had never happened before in the country’s history.

Ms. Acconcia appealed to everyone, especially political parties, to ensure that peace prevails before, during and after the December elections.
