Teen tennis sensation Shika McKorley returned in style from a disappointing loss in the women’s final of the McDan Foundation training matches to win the women’s U-16 final last Saturday.
Shika, 13, daughter of Dr. Dan Mckorley, came out of a set against to defeat Tarkwa Goldfields Tennis Academy’s Tracy Ampah 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
The same unforced errors that characterized Shika’s loss to Mariama Ibrahim in the majors affected her in the first set, but she recovered late in the second set thanks to her powerful serve.
He went on to close out the tie against a weary Ampah by claiming the final set 6-1.
After claiming her awards in front of her delighted parents, Shika expressed that her success was due to a change in mindset after a series.
“I feel great, I just changed my mind to just have fun and play what I know and not rush. I want to take tennis to the top. I am very excited and proud that my father could see me lift this trophy today, ”Shika told the Daily Graphic in a post-match interview.
The boys’ final was a much easier affair with Abubakari Yakubu Lea Jnr defeating Lameck Bagerbaseh 6-1, 6-1 to claim the men’s U-16 title.
Yakubu Lea Jnr, 14, said he was motivated to counter the trend that had seen him lose the last two meetings against Bagerbaseh.
“I’ve lost to him twice, so when I was going to play I was a bit furious because I didn’t want to lose and fortunately I won in two sets in a row,” he said.
The St John’s Grammar Senior High School (SHS) student said his main goal as a tennis player was to play at the highest level of the sport like his hero, Roger Federer.
Angel Bagerbaseh defeated Lisel Ampah 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to win the U-12 women’s final, which lasted almost four hours and Donatus Nyaaba defeated Godfred Ofori 6-1, 6-1 to win the Boys’ U -12 final.
In the U14 category, Joseph Koku Doe-Adjani won the men’s title with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Aaron Armaah and Doris Adjokatse defeated Alice Acheampong 6-3, 6-3 to claim the women’s title.
All the finalists received trophies, medals, educational material and tennis material from the organizers.
