Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has praised Saturday rookie Nat Philipps for his Man of the Match display against West Ham.

Philipps was called up to Klopp’s side after an injury crisis that has left Liverpool without star players Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho.

Klopp said Philipps “incredibly helped the team” beat David Moyes’ side 2-1 after initially going 1-0 down when Pablo Fornals opened the scoring in just 10 minutes.

Klopp referred to Philipps as a “monster in the air” and called his performance “incredible.”

Sky expert Jamie Carragher was of the same opinion as Klopp, naming Philipps as the man of the match after the match.

Reflecting on Philipps’s performance, Klopp told The Match of The Day: ‘He’s a brilliant guy, smart, smart, everything. He’s not pretty to look at, he’s not Messi, but who cares?

In the air he is a monster! It was incredible.

“For the first game, I think everyone can imagine how nervous he must be after a long wait. It’s a crazy story, three years ago I was on my way to America to go to college.

“ Twelve championship teams wanted it and it was clear to me that it was going, and I was fine with it, and it didn’t work out for some reason, and it’s great! Tonight he was right, he helped the team incredibly. ”

Philipps joined Liverpool four years ago after a successful tryout, having previously represented alongside Bolton’s academy.

The 23-year-old spent last season on loan at Bundesliga 2 Stuttgart, making 22 appearances for the German team.

His only other senior start for the Reds was in the FA Cup last season, when a stunner from Curtis Jones ensured Liverpool would humiliate an Everton team with full force at Anfield.
