Manchester United manager Solskjaer messages Gareth Southgate about Mason Greenwood

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer declined to participate in a club versus country battle for Mason Greenwood following the teenager’s snub of England.

Gareth Southgate sent both Manchester United forward and Manchester City’s Phil Foden home in September after they broke COVID-19 protocols during a trip to Iceland. He then skipped both players from his most recent Tres Leones squad in early October.

Since then, Solskjaer has faced his own questions regarding Greenwood’s discipline, though he denied reports that the 19-year-old had been late for training, backing his player.

Speaking ahead of United’s game with Arsenal on Sunday, Solskjaer revealed that his conversations with Southgate had been friendly in recent months.

“Well, it’s Gareth’s decision who he wants on his team and I had a really good conversation with him before the last team meeting,” Solskjaer said.

“I don’t want to interfere. It is your decision who you choose, of course, and if you want to choose any of my players, they are available of course.

“You are not going to bring me into this discussion, I am definitely not going to give you headlines!

“I am full of admiration for the way Gareth is running the England team and I think he has done a fantastic job. I will leave him to focus on his work and I on mine.”

United are undefeated since the international break after wins over Newcastle, PSG and RB Leipzig, and a draw against Chelsea somewhere in between. Next up is a home game against Arsenal, with United entering the game full of confidence after their landslide victory over the Bundesliga leaders.

Greenwood returned to United for their Champions League meeting with RB Leipzig in the middle of the week and scored the opening goal in the German team’s 5-0 win. The teenager is in contention for a fresh start against Arsenal as Anthony Martial serves the final game of a three-game suspension following his red card against Tottenham.
