The Vice-President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, has commissioned a Training Institute for Ghana Education Service staff at Saltpond in Mfantseman Municipality in the central region.

Conceived by the Kufuor administration, construction works started in 2011 but were abandoned in 2012 by the previous administration due to lack of funds. The project was resurrected in 2017 and taken over by GETFUND thanks to the efforts of the late Mfantseman MP Ekow Quansah Hayford.

Speaking at commissioning on Friday, October 30, 2020, Vice President Bawumia said the completion and commissioning of the facility, which has 90 separate rooms, 2 large conference rooms, training rooms, and 50 parking space automobiles, is a more concrete test. of the commitment of the Akufo-Addo administration with the integral development of the education sector.

“Since we took office in 2017, the government of Nana Akufo-Addo has followed a policy of ‘Teacher first’, which has led to the implementation of policies and programs aimed at continuous improvement in the number and quality of students. teachers and other stakeholders in education.

“We have taken concrete steps in the education sector. For example, we have hired 93,274 new teachers since 2017, to eliminate the backlog of teachers qualified but not employed by the previous government.

“In the past, teachers taught for three or four years, but were only paid three months of their accumulated salaries. We have cleared those arrears.

“We have reinstated the Arabic teacher, nurse and instructor training assignments canceled by the previous government. We are building a massive infrastructure across the country. And, as stated, we are ensuring ongoing professional development of teachers every year. Also we have introduced a new and transparent policy for the promotion of teachers ”.

The vice president said that all these measures and more had led Ghana to rank No. 2, behind China, in the league of nations that has improved the well-being of teachers the most in recent times.

“President Nana Akufo-Addo is determined to develop Ghana’s human resource base. But he cannot do so without the active participation and input of teachers, hence the priority he has placed on the development and well-being of teachers. I can assure you of many plans in the works to make the education sector even more vibrant, “he said.

Speaking earlier, Vice Minister of Education Hon Gifty Twum Ampofo shed more light on the Continuing Professional Training program, which includes at least four days of intensive training per year and two hours per week of peer learning.

The Vice President was attended by the wife of the late MP, who is now the PNP Parliamentary Candidate for Mfantseman, Ms Ophelia Mensah Hayford, Minister of the Central Region Hon Kwamena Duncan, Minister of Transport Hon Kwaku Ofori Asiamah and other government officials.
