Jamie Leweling received a debut call
Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor opened up about his decision to hand over a debut call-up to teenager Jamie Leweling.
The German-born midfielder has been included in the 23-man squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game against Sudan next month. Jamie plays for SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the German second division.
According to Akonnor, the player is one for the 19-year-old is one for the future and he couldn’t afford to lose it to Germany.
“The [Jamie Leweling] He is a young man who goes everywhere with many teams interested in him for what he has done. It is growing very fast. He just had a second team shot and now he’s with the first team. He has been a player that I think is a hope for the future, “Akonnor said.
He is one of the guys that we can have because he is young, 19 years old and has had the opportunity to play for the German national team, so we are seeing how we can incorporate him to help us in the future. He is someone in whom I believe that if not today, he will be hope for our future and that is why he is here.
The Black Stars will face Sudan on 12 November in Cape Coast and will play the North Africans five days later in Khartoum.
They lead Group D with six points from their first two matches, having beaten South Africa and São Tomé and Príncipe last year in November.
